(Prunus pumila)
This native North American species of cherry is in the rose family! It is a low-growing deciduous shrub ideal for xeriscaping, dry, sandy, or rocky soils, and erosion control. Once established, this hardy native shrub requires little water, thrives in full sun, and is known for its fragrant white spring flowers, black edible fruit, and reddish-purple fall color.
Sand Cherry typically has a rich, dark, and tart-sweet flavor, often described as a mix between a cherry and a plum, or sometimes slightly astringent. While edible fresh, their, often complex, flavor is highly prized in jams, pies, and jellies.
